Hertsavers referral schemes

As we rely on the support of the local community to strengthen the credit union, we are on the mission to grow our credit union. Therefore, we have the following referral schemes in place. The only criteria is that your referee needs to be working or living in Hertfordshire.

Child Benefit referral scheme:

Members that refer a new member to Hertsavers for a Child Benefit Loan can now claim a £50 referral bonus for themselves and the new member, who will also receive a £50 bonus. You can find out more here.

Workplace champions

If you already have a payroll savings scheme set up at your workplace, you can become a workplace champion. If your referee takes an introductory loan of up to £2000, which is payable over three years, the Champion and their referral will both receive an additional £100 to their account. Find out more.

Why should your referee join the Hertsavers Credit Union?

1. We are a not-for-profit so your money is safe.
2. We have low interest rates therefore when you borrow a loan, you are also saving money.
3. All savings up to £85,000 per member are guaranteed by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

The film which has decision-making pauses where you can decide what route they’d choose has been funded from cash recovered from loan sharks under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA).

You can watch the film here.

Loan sharks attack surfers on social media

Did you know that one on five victims find their loan shark on social media?

The number of loan sharks has increased on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to advertise their illegal loans and target potential victims.

The loan sharks lure people in with attractive loan offers and won’t ask for paperwork or credit checks. They will quickly resort to intimidation, threats and violence to enforce repayment and trap borrowers in a spiral of debt.

With Christmas around the corner, more and more people will fall into such a trap. Therefore, we are supporting the Stop Loan Sharks Week Campaign  (#SharkFreeSurfing), from 3o November to 04 December 2020, to raise awareness of the dangers of such loan sharks and help people access advice and support if they have fallen victim to this crime.

Here are some ways that you can spot a loan shark.

If you have been a victim of illegal money lending, or are concerned about someone you know, please contact the Stop Loan Sharks 24-hour helpline on 0300 555 2222 or visit www.stoploansharks.co.uk.

Healthy Start Vouchers scheme – are you eligible?

Did you know that there are over 5,000 Hertfordshire families who are missing out on £100s of food and milk vouchers?

According to the latest NHS figures, there are 8,700 Hertfordshire families who should be getting Healthy Start Vouchers and less than 3,400 are.

If you are at least 10 weeks pregnant or have a child under four years old you could be entitled to Healthy Start Vouchers worth £3.10 per child per week, to spend on milk, plain fresh and frozen fruit and vegetables, and instant formula milk. You can also use them to buy pulses and canned fruit and vegetable as long as they have no fat, salt, sugar or other flavouring added. The vouchers can be redeemed at local retailers.

If you are entitled to Healthy Start Vouchers you will also get free vitamins designed to help pregnant and breastfeeding women and growing children.

Pregnant women and every child over one and under four years old can get one voucher every week. Children under one year old can get £6.20 per week.

To be eligible you should be in receipt of certain means-tested benefits. Check your eligibility here.

For example, a parent with a new baby and a three-year-old could get vouchers worth almost £500 a year.

You can still receive the vouchers if you live with your partner and they receive one of these benefits or you are the dependent child of someone who receives them. If you are pregnant and under 18, you do not have to be in receipt of any benefits to qualify.

Take-up of the vouchers is very low, around 40 percent, so check you are entitled as soon as possible to prevent missing out. You can pick up an application leaflet at your GP’s or baby clinic. Alternatively, you can phone for a form on 0345 607 6823 or download and print one here.

Due to COVID19 restrictions, the form does not need to be signed by a health professional.

You can also use the benefit-checker on the County Council’s website, and access free information about benefits that you might be missing out on. www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/benefits

You can get more information about Health Start on their website.
