Why be a Information Point volunteer with HertSavers?

As a not-for-profit organisation, our volunteers are a vital component of who we are and what we do.

Whilst many of our volunteers stay with us long term, some, as you would imagine, use the skills and knowledge gained with us to move on to roles in the paid sector. Whichever option a volunteer chooses, they can be certain that their time is valued by us and, greatly, appreciated by all of the Hertfordshire people they help along the way.

What if I don’t know much about credit unions?

Don’t worry, you can learn. As part of your induction, we will provide training and an introduction to credit unions. Plus, an explanation of the products and services we offer. You’ll be surprised just how quickly you will pick things up.

What does an Information Point volunteer do?

As well as the, normal, face-to-face support of providing information about our credit union and the services we offer, you would be helping existing members with their accounts and helping them to complete application forms. Also, as a primary contact with the public, a vital part of the role would be to explain the benefits of credit union membership – encouraging non-members to join us.

What skills do I need?

Well, firstly, you don’t have to be a financial expert or a wizard on the PC. What we would be looking for is someone who is organised, has good communication skills, is good with numbers, computer literate, values accuracy, with the ability to work well with others.

What personal attributes are required?

Although the skills and knowledge needed can be taught, usually, the personal attributes are part of who we are. So, for our Information Point role, we would be looking for people with attributes like:

  • Outgoing
  • good listener and communicator
  • literate
  • proactive
  • adaptable
  • honest and reliable
  • friendly and a team worker, and sincere and able to show empathy.

How much time would I be expected to commit?

As we’re sure you will appreciate, it’s important to ensure that an Information Point is open when we say it will be (usually for two to four hours a session) and that it is staffed at the agreed times. So we would expect some commitment. How much is for you and the credit union to discuss and decide. Don’t commit to time you cannot spare. Just start with a few hours a week and see how it goes.

Where would I be volunteering?

We want to develop information Points all over Hertfordshire.. as we are always looking to expand our services – especially into some of the more rural parts of Hertfordshire, you may be able to help us to set up a new Information Point in your area.

What do I get out of volunteering with HertSavers?

Although these posts are unpaid, they do offer many other benefits. You would gain direct work experience of the Financial Services industry. Use existing skills, learn and develop new ones – helping to strengthen your CV. Meet new people and, maybe, make some new friends. Knowing that, by being part of a local social enterprise, you are making a positive contribution in your community.
